• “And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord” (Lev. 23:15–16).
• “I will take you as My people, and I will be your God” (Exod. 6:7).
• “These five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah” (Josh.10:16).
It’s really good to be back home after an incredible ten days in Taiwan. In most of our meetings, we touched on Passover. Just teaching and declaring that Jesus is our Passover lamb and that Passover is really about deliverance and being set free seemed to release so much blessing. And of course, it seems that the Lord is releasing something very new to all of us during this year’s Passover/Resurrection season.
Count Down to Pentecost
From the second day of the Passover celebration, the Jewish people were to begin counting down to Pentecost. This is called counting the omer. So today, April 26 (Nissan 30), is already the 15th day (which means only 35 more days until Pentecost [May 31–June 1]).
There are several reasons for this counting. One is to have expectation. Another is to walk together with the Lord. The more I study this concept of following God’s calendar, the more I see it’s because He desires fellowship with us. He wants to celebrate with us during the feasts and first fruits, as well as during our sabbaths. When the Lord initiated the exodus from Egypt, He told Moses to introduce Him to the people as “Lord.” He used His name, something He hadn’t done with Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob. We read, “I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name Lord.I was not known to them” (Exod. 6:3).
He wanted to be God for Israel, and they to be His people. Exodus 6:7 reads, “I will take you as My people, and I will be your God.” In short, He wanted fellowship with them. Thus, even counting down to Pentecost can be thought of as walking with the Lord. I like how this connects to Galatians 5:16, which states, “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Thus, we can say that counting down to Pentecost is a way of walking with Him so we don’t get sidetracked or ensnared.
Counting Down to Pentecost Is a Kind of Warfare So We Aren’t Stopped!
Some years ago, the Lord showed us how the devil forms alliances to keep us from advancing. We see this in Joshua 10. The Israelites had crossed over into the Promised Land; they had conquered Jericho, and then even Ai. But suddenly they were attacked by an alliance of five kings. The Lord told Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you” (Josh.10:6). It was an incredible battle. Even the Lord took part, and we read that more of the enemy was destroyed by hailstones than by Joshua’s soldiers. Furthermore, the Lord was so committed to them winning that He allowed the sun to stand still so they could obtain complete victory.
The enemy army was destroyed and the “five kings had fled and hidden themselves in a cave at Makkedah” (Josh. 10:16). This is very instructive because Makkedah means “diminishing, decreasing, poverty, and depression.” It also is linked with the idea of “driving,” or “forcing us.” In other words, Joshua and the people had entered the land, but now the enemy wanted to keep them from growing and expanding. This is like us today, and even relates to this time just after Passover. We have been blessed and we have expectation. But the enemy knows this and wants to stop us, so he sends an alliance against us. Next week, I will explain in more detail about these five kings because each represents a specific demonic entity that keeps us from advancing. Together, they are a demonic alliance against us.
But the Lord gave the Israelites victory. Note that He Himself joined the battle by throwing hailstones and by lengthening the day. What an incredible picture. So, please count down to Pentecost. Know that while you are doing so, you are focusing on the Lord and are doing spiritual warfare against that alliance that wants to keep you small and ineffective.
Obviously, it’s much more than just counting. The Lord is battling with you. I’m not saying we’ll see hailstones against the enemy, or even the sun standing still. But definitely, the Lord will be fighting with us as we count.
So be sure to count. Today, April 26, is the 15th day of counting the omer. As you count, watch and see yourself advancing in victory.
Thanks for praying.
